"By a 6-3 vote on Friday, the Supreme Court struck down President Donald Trump’s regime of 'emergency' tariffs, on the grounds that (I am summarizing at a very high level here) federal law does not allow a doddering near-octogenarian to wreak havoc on the global economy by mashing out Truth Social posts from the comfort of a White House toilet seat."

"Tariffs have been political malpractice for Trump.

They were an inflection point: all CBS polls post-Liberation Day have had him at a negative net approval vs. none beforehand.

All of it for nothing. Rarely have I seen people turn against a policy as fast as they did tariffs."

"I keep seeing people say that the SCOTUS ruling on tariffs will help Trump by taking economic matches from the baby.

That's wrong.

It's almost certainly going to make his political problems worse, because the ruling shines a light on the tariffs, and he is going to use other authorities to raise people's prices."

"The ruling this Friday is the first time during Trump’s second term that the justices have struck down one of his policies. Not only that, the policy they struck down is Trump’s signature economic policy – he has used tariffs to bash, lord over and terrorize dozens of other countries and make himself the King of the Economic Jungle."

Trump’s global tariffs have finally been overturned. What next?

The US supreme court ruled against the president. Let’s hope the court removes its pro-Trump glasses on other issues and stands up for the rule of law

The Guardian

"The Tax Foundation estimated that Trump’s tariffs cost the average American household about $1,000 in 2025. They projected that cost to be $1,300 in 2026. Congress’s Joint Economic Committee–Minority, made up of Democrats, estimates that number to be low. They say the actual cost has been $1,700 per household."

Letters from an American

"It was a huge tax increase on the American people, imposed without reference at all to Congress, which is the only government body with the power to raise taxes. Now the Supreme Court has said that the chaos and cost of Trump’s tariffs was for nothing. Trump’s claim of authority to levy tariffs under IEEPA was unconstitutional all along."

@wdlindsy Many people knew from the start they were unconstitutional because the Constitution doesn't give him taxing authority. That's high school government class. But until it's tried in the SCOTUS, nothing can really be done about that. Even his own advisors warned him he'll loose the case, but as smug as he is thinking he's bought the court, he didn't listen to that.
