Collecting pieces for a tractor upgrade. This came first.

Seems to fit there ok. Need to weld a strong mount for it, the funny "lbs" stuff means it can pull about 6 tons on the first winding. Location is good but where to put the battery? It's big!

Battery hasn't arrived yet so hopefully I can figure it out by then. Not enough room under the hood, I think.

That's a helluva lot of winch for a small tractor (though who am I to talk?).
It might be worth changing to a synthetic winch line to save weight, and maybe think about a ground anchor to make better use of the winch for moving stuff.
Scotch blocks under the front wheels, on cables tethered to the winch mount.

A winch jib could also be a nice addition. One like on a traction engine crane (or a Land Rover).

@Maker_of_Things Interesting, not seen Scotch blocks before. Not sure they work well in soft ground?

The winch is primarily for forestry work and second for bailing me out when I get stuck on the steep hill with a load.

It's a tractor, so weight up front is highly desirable. Most have a front ballast or wheel weights. So a heavy winch + cable + lead battery up front is a bonus!

I do know about synthetic line (sailor thing 😉) and have chosen steel for a reason - abrasion resistance when dragging logs through the forest.

The boom is a good idea for loading logs, will consider it when making the mount, thanks.

Since I don't have a skid plate but plenty of old plows I was thinking a ground anchor on the rear hitch if needed or a sling around a nearby tree for less messing up the ground.

@yngmar
Cool, yes, the weight could be handy, and necessary. The scotch blocks worked well for the army, and recovery folks, back in the day. They are lightweight and reversible. The flat side is used on hard surfaces while inverted the plough edge will bite into the soft ground.

Some old school recovery folks still use them (7:15).

I have been tempted to make a pair for the car, if I get around to having a rear winch mount and big Anderson plug, again.

The crane boom would be really useful too, but not figured a way to fit one onto a Skoda Octavia yet! 😄

I have no doubt you'll figure it out one day....

@suearcher @yngmar
Yeah, but I also want to keep it road legal and insurable. 😉

@Maker_of_Things Well that was rather unimpressive when they could've just tied it to a tree!

Recovery folk and forestry folk do not seem to think alike. The latter do try to avoid fucking up the forest floor, at least if they want to practice sustainable forestry instead of "harvesting".

You clearly need a tractor, then you can leave the poor Octavia intact :)

Perhaps this? 😁
