YouTube for smart TVs is about to get chatty, but who asked for it? - Lemmy NZ

>Google is cramming Gemini AI chat into YouTube on smart TVs when nobody asked for it

I wonder how many that will impact though. Are there really a large group of people that use the OS on their smart tv over and device connected to it? It’s been years now but all I remember is TV brands choosing not to update their apps, bricking the channels after only a little bit of time. I figured by now, most everyone is displaying Youtube on their tv from another device that can block ads and anti-feature.
Believe it or not, I still use it on Roku. When this TV dies I’m definitely getting a dumb TV and hooking up an HTPC or something, but for now the YouTube app on Roku works fine for the times we need it.
None of my non-programmer friends use anything like that. They use the smart tv or their console to play videos.
Shout-out to Smart tube on android TVs
Fuck ya, all my homes use smarttube
Guarantee you it was the Gemini AI team who asked if they could put it into YouTube because they totally just to need expose more users to it and those users will totally see the benefit of it and start actually using it …
Their TV app was already fucking unusable before this. Smarttube or nothing.
Wow, so maybe my smart AI fridge can then order things my smart AI tv suggested
Here’s the thing though… Don’t buy a TV. You don’t need one. There’s nothing good on TV.
