new from me: FR#154 - Search and Community

@HolosSocial shut down their fediverse search engine, over concerns that some users have the flag for being indexable turned on without consciously enabling it.

If the consent flag Holos relied on frequently doesn't represent consent, that's a problem, because Mastodon's FASP project relies on the same.

FR#154 – Search and Community

Fediverse search engine Holos Discover shut down this week, showing structural issues how to distinguish between individual and community consent.

@fediversereport @HolosSocial I love how everyone is just kinda ignoring that all their posts are already on Google results, copied hundredfold
@privateger @fediversereport @HolosSocial
well atleast you can turn of search indexing (and also force login to view posts)
@thing @fediversereport @HolosSocial which not nearly enough software actually respects or federates properly. mind that almost all instances let you view all public posts they know without login
@thing @fediversereport @HolosSocial this is also why I think log in to view is fundamentally stupid. the post is public. you can go on an instance of literally any of your followers and still see all your posts. it doesn't work, all it does is make it less convenient to see the replies/full thread
@thing @privateger @fediversereport @HolosSocial "log in to view" instances when the post doesn't render as intended on Mastodon and I can't see what it is
