Being trans was considered body dysmorphic disorder and a mental illness until it was changed not so long ago, and sometimes I wonder if it would have been better to keep it as a mental disorder and treat those in need instead of giving them life altering surgeries.

And those surgeries date back to the Weimar Republic in modern medicine. From then it’s been accepted as a treatment for gender dysphoria in most western nations except under a certain infamous regime. Sure it was often the treatment of last resort, but doctors slowly learned it’s the best treatment
