Finally had enough. It is no longer morally responsible to gift Big Tech with your privacy and data. Also have had enough of the AI slop.

Deleted Facebook/Instagram. Prepping Discord to do the same. Switched from Google to Proton/DuckDuckGo. And joined Mastodon :)

What other privacy friendly software/sites am I missing?

@maart how did you handle the possible lost of touch with people from ig/fb? did you just not care, asked them to message you elsewhere...?

@moschehaus to be honest, I haven’t had close contact with most of the people on there outside of a random liked post. Anybody else I have their phone numbers or we are already in group chats.

I do believe you can deactivate your Facebook account but keep FB Messenger, maybe that’s a good middle ground?

@maart nice, thanks, did not know about that! so do you plan on communicating through cellphone text messages if I may ask? I am interested since I am intrigued to completely abandon meta as well, but I am also kinda afraid nobody will join me on matrix :))

@moschehaus family is through iMessage/texts. I was able to convince most of my friend groups to switch from Discord over to Signal about a year ago. Have you tried matrix? Heard about it but haven’t tried it myself.

@maart oh nice, I see now. Nice job with the switch to Signal.
I have been using matrix for some time (in fact I am self hosting a conduit server). It takes some time to set up and to get used to the decentralization, so I have noticed that for not too tech-savvy people (ie the majority of my social circle) it is too complex...

what is nice however is that when you are hosting the server yourself, you can set up bridges to ig, fb, wa, discord, slack and some others. Pretty neat! I might give you some review on that if you are interested
