What was going on underneath all the snow and ice? Plants waiting for their moment to start their spring growth. This is a Dichanthelium species, a grass that has a strategy of starting off with a basal rosette of leaves that hug the ground. This gives them a theoretical head start on growth because the microclimate at the soil level is a protected. Note the cute little feathery hairs along the edges of the leaves, the plant equivalent of a fuzzy sweater. 1/2 #grasses #nativePlants

Plants like this, arriving during #lent, always make me think of the melancholy music of the Christian hymn, “Now the Green Blade Rises.” (I have a soft spot for church music with pagan themes!)

Fields of our hearts
That cold and bare have been.
Love will come again
Like grass arising green.

@ClimateJenny one of my favorite hymns ever. but what's the pagan part here?
@marion_grau Celebrating the rebirth of the natural world?
@marion_grau I’m using the term rather loosely, in the sense that allusions to nature and Creation are pagan-friendly themes in Christianity.
