was pondering how to root my television to eliminate yet another source of #spyware when i realized how prescient #Palahniuk was in #FightClub "what you own ends up owning you" - every device requires active attention in the 21st century or it will end up owning you.

@ghostrunner where can I learn more about this? I imagine this question is like asking what part of the ocean should I worry about?....but appreciate any tips to help me learn quickly and focus. ;^)

@1sxteenthDANE its hardware specific, I recommend using tor to search qwant for your make and model and "spyware" to assess exposure and "open source firmware" to see if there are instructions to root it.

If you are lucky, someone has a foss alternative you can dump onto a thumb drive and just root it.

If not, well, there are sometimes guides to remove the most egregious violators from the runtime.

I told my TV “ Alexa disable Alexa.” what a surprise Alexa did not know how to do that.
