Finally, a USB standard that can provide the data AND power requirements of a city.

The time travelling aspect is nice, too…

The OP: datapro.net/…/usb-type-d-connector-unveiled.html

Following the overwhelmingly positive response to 180° reversible connectors like USB Type C and Apple’s Lightning, USB Type D’s novel plus-shaped design can correctly be inserted in 4 different orientations, a mere 90 degrees apart.

“With our reversible Type C connector, we allowed users to blindly plug in their devices with minimal frustration. But we wanted to take it a step further. Now with USB Type D, no matter how crazy your night has been, we guarantee that you’ll be able to successfully plug in your phone before passing out.”

Remember when funny people still did April fools? I’ve not seen a good April fools hoax that doesn’t transparently reek of marketing in years

USB Type-D Connector Unveiled

The USB Group today unveiled plans for their latest connection standard, USB Type D.

Google Japan always put out great ones, but admittedly I can’t remember how old the last one I remember is, and it could have very well been a decade ago ;_;
My favorite was when they turned Google Maps into a playable Dragon Quest map

Not necessarily April fools jokes, but the Gboard team has been designing and making silly keyboards (and publishing the schematics)

The most recent is a rotary dial keyboard

Get 360° freedom.
Alas only on a single axis.

I still always need to attempt plugging in these motherfuckers a few times. Never had one break or otherwise become unusable though. Strong as an aux.

I just stick my index finger right next to it, use the finger to feel the socket and then move the plug forward.
The taper in the front does the rest.

Doesn’t work as well with USB C because:

  • The curved bevel is not good enough for the job
  • On the PC, the USB C is recessed and the I shield has a big enough hole that the plug can get stuck on the side of the socket instead of correctly inside.
  • Honestly, USB A feels easier to use in that case.

    1.21 gigawatts!? 1.21 gigawatts… Great scott…
Ahem, It is pronounced “Jiga watts”

Next up: USB-E which is just a barrel plug that can be inserted 360 degrees.
Maybe the exact size and shape of a headphone jack

Ie the headphone jack everyone went to such trouble to eradicate.

    Swings and roundabouts.

    But it’s a 16-ring barrel plug.
    “One point twenty-one jiggawatts?!”
I wonder how Doc pronounced “gif”?
He would pronounce it “yif” to piss off both sides
When I say that I want you to give me “the D”, this is also what I mean.

    The mouthfeel vs the current

Sure, they can request 1.21GW, but the answer’s always “no”.
How else do we go back in time?
Thanks. Now I can’t get the image of a time-traveling DeLorian, with an iPhone plugged in where the MrFusion was, out of my head.
When this baby starts transferring 88TB an hour, youre gonna see some serious shif.
    That’s heavy!
Great! I’ll get the dolorian and fix this whole timeline!
“The massive ceramic connector and 10 inch thick cable immediatelly make obvious that the USB-D connector has been designed from the ground up to be able to power the latest generation of Graphics Card”
    usb D(eez nuts)
Superconductor kept at a few Kelvin should do it. Available on any system with build in cryogenic unit. It’s part of the D port standard after all.

Cryogenics is only an optional part of the standard. You’ll need to make sure both devices support the USB D pd420.69 spec otherwise you’ll never get the full rated speed.

Stupid usbif always making critical features optional.

Don’t forget the cable also needs the same.
Any superconductor will do actually, it’s just that the ones we have at this point need to be really frigging cold. A room temp superconductor is the dream, and would function exactly the same as one that only works at a few kelvin.
How many standards does it take to make one-for-all actual standard?
I was REALLY hoping to find a source page for that, sounded hilarious
Wait, is this now satire or not? I am so confused.
it is from 1st of April, the so called April’s fools day. 1.21giga watts, at non lethal voltages of approximately 100 volts is approx. 12 million amperes. Solid copper wires for this current would be aprox 4m (12ft) in diameter.
    So, yes, it is satire.
Oh now I see the date. Damn, what an amazing article!
But will the D fit in the A hole?
