I would love to live without a car. But my town seems hell bent on making nothing walkable.
Same - riding public transit? No big deal. Walking 2 miles to the nearest bus stop with no shade when its 95+ freedom degrees out in the summer, only to have to transfer twice to get to the pharmacy to pick up my meds? Kinda frustrating.
The main issue for us is groceries. There are just no grocery sources within 5 minutes without a car.
Any delivery options? $10/week in tips still is far cheaper than a car insurance alone. Of course picking out better produce is an advantage of in-person.
The option I didn’t think to try while I was car-free was taxi, but one way.
I considered taxis too expensive to take to the grocery so never did. But I also never considered the compromise of walking one way while taking the taxi home with your purchases.
Less expensive and more convenient
Mishmash2000Awesome! Now vote representatives in based on their active transport infrastructure plans! 18% would swing almost any election! Cargo bikes and the ever growing range of micromobility options are great but as ever safe infrastructure is key!
The great news is that once it’s built out ongoing maintenance is negligible compared with the endless march of pothole repairs, adding ‘one more lane’ and resurfacing car infrastructure requires!
They aren’t necessarily asking the right question. It shouldn’t be “who wants to live without a car?” It should be “who wants to live without needing a car?”
I dont want to have to drive every day. I dont want to need a car to get to work, or get groceries, or go to restaurants, or visit friends, etc. But, cars are handy for stuff. I like to use a car to go to random trailheads, or do a roadtrip, or do a big grocery day, or carpool with friends to an event, etc. Those things ultimately make the cost of owning a car worthwhile to me.
