It's incredible how much European policies are under blackmail of the lobby of farmers, a social class who lives off European subsidies and regulatory privileges.

What is this called? Regulatory capture?

@elCelio Yeah, it's awful. Unfortunately, there's probably no other good way. I work in agriculture, and without subsidies, food would immediately become several times more expensive. And that would be political suicide for both the EU and nation states. Situation would be better if GMOs were allowed, but that is blocked by another powerful lobby, the green one, purely for ideological reasons.

@mirano
Exactly.

I'm in favour of EU subsidies on agriculture, it is inevitable in a richer continent like Europe, otherwise not only food will cost more, but also land management would be much more expensive.

On the other hand it is crazy how much EU trade policy is held back by a lobby that lives off the EU.
GMOs are held back too, even if farmers with animals are very happy to import cheap GMOs to feed their animals.

@elCelio Unfortunately, food is simply an extremely powerful weapon for blackmail, there is a lot of money involved, it means political power. Unfortunately, they also have mostly demented, narrow-minded, and selfish views of the world.
GMOs are a terribly screwed-up thing. Completely safe, cheaper, higher yields, less water, fewer chemicals, less ravaged land, way smaller carbon footprint. But Greens would lose their next agenda after losing their nonsensical fight against nuclear energy...
@mirano
the GMO thing unifies Greens and Far Right, somehow.
