I guess this is as good a time as any to remind people that

if you only know how to contact friends through a single platform, you're liable to lose touch with them sooner or later.

Give them alternatives. ANY alternatives.

Any single place can just blow up overnight. And if something is starting to smell like a brewing dumpsterfire, that SHOULD be a clear sign.

@anthropy This.

I have lost contact with people because apps were deleted or someone was removed from a group. Always get another way to contact. Email, phone, XMPP, Matrix, smoke signals, whatever

@culper @anthropy XMPP is still around?
@fluffywolfjasper Yes it is. It is very versatile. I think other apps, like, session, simpleX, signal, have taken over in popularity. XMPP still works well and can be decentralized as you want it to be. It can do texting, files, pics, and even voice. Encryption is pretty good as well. Matrix seems to be the new platform that everyone loves, but requires a lot more resources.
@culper ah, I see. So it’s more that it’s quite easy to set up.
@fluffywolfjasper I think a XMPP server is pretty simple to setup. Some servers can be uo and running in minutes. The client side can be somewhat complicated if the end user is not so tech savvy
@culper how encrypted and private is it compared to something like matrix or signal? How big is it nowadays?
@fluffywolfjasper I am not a security analyst, but it seems secure and private. Make sure to use the OMEMO encryption plugin. A lot of people still use it. It is just one platform out of the many.
@culper what’s OMEMO do? And which platform is the most popular right now?

@fluffywolfjasper OMEMO is a plugin/extention that runs in a XMPP client. I allows encrypted texting. https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0384.html

I have no idea which platform is them most popular.

If you want to know more about XMPP go to xmpp.org
