Unfortunately, vehicular cycling is actually a real thing. And it seems to be making life worse for people who bike normally.

The bike lane:
In the UK it’s entirely up to the cyclist whether they want to use the cycle lane or not. Good job too, as many of them are fucking lethal, basically trapping the cyclist in the shittiest part of the road while giving drivers the impression that they can pass as close as they like. Want to avoid that wheel-breaking pothole? No. Stay in your shit-filled cratered lane and take your chances or you will be taken out by that car zooming past 3 inches from your elbow.
Taking the lane is also encouraged in the Highway Code when it would be dangerous to let a car overtake.
