I experienced it in Eastern Germany as a child. It was not hostile, but I will never want to have these times back.
Tanks rolled through our city regularly and everyone tried to keep a distance with their car because you never knew how careless or drunk the drivers were.
Also remembering when oranges arrived in the supermarket, the queue was literally two blocks long. On the rare occasions bananas were available, it was useless to line up anymore at some point.
Power outages were absolutely normal.
But I lived in a time, where you already heard jokes about not being able to make certain jokes without going to jail.
I got punishment for putting my feet on a Soviet memorial.
And I participated the "Fahnenappell", feeling similar to a Nazi march.
Never got a "higher rank", asking too many questions and coming from a suspect family.
