@catsalad in case you haven't already, I recommend you to try out Delta Chat instead, it doesn't require phone numbers, onboarding is super smooth just set a name and go,
it has good multi-device and multi-profile support, so you can have a profile for family and friends with more personal image/avatar and nick while other profile for more public/work relations

that blogpost from 2019 is not relevant to Delta Chat, Delta Chat uses a small secure subset of PGP implemented in Rust, and btw forward secrecy is coming to Delta Chat this year likely

How DeltaChat is better then SimpleX?
simplex feels more beta/experimental, I managed to end with duplicated groups etc.
UI/UX-wise Delta Chat is better and more user-friendly
DeltaChat has good multi-device support, you can use your profile everywhere
DC has in-chat mini-apps (like collaborative editor, to-do lists, polls, etc) and it is offline-first (including the mini-apps)
all while:
apk size of simplex: 70MB
Delta Chat: 20MB
