The real reason #ai threatens #opensource
AI companies are discouraging people from contributing to Open Source projects because their work is scraped and reused for someone else's business model.
IMHO, The social implications are far more erosive than any legal or financial reasons.
This happened even before AI. Honestly, I don't think BigCos and startups were better before. Some FOSS projects are even funded by them. Otherwise, this is one of the reasons the AGPL license was born.
The Debian distribution is largely used by companies with little/no return to the project. That never prevented me or anyone else from contributing.
There is a big difference: the use of debian has been broadened, which is a good thing. However, vibe coding agents do not reflect back on the open source code they have been trained on.
