That 90 minute video on renewable energy could have and should have been a blog post.
Key points:
- If all the land currently in use in the USA for growing corn specifically for ethanol (to add to fossil fuels) was converted to solar farms, that alone would meet the USA's energy needs.
- Lithium batteries and solar panels last decades and are pretty much infinitely recyclable.
- Over the lifetime of a petrol car, you'll spend more on bloody petrol than on purchasing the fucking car.
- As usual, everything is Ronald Reagan's fault, the prick.

@ephemeromorph
• There's not enough lithium in the world for everyone to have an electric car (especially at the rate we're wasting it)
• The type of batteries used only do so many cycles
• Mining lithium is environmentally horrendous.

Not that any of that means anyone should stay on fossil fuels, rather it means we need to be careful with resources instead of wasting them on frippery and we should use active transport where possible instead of powered vehicles!

@ddlyh The vid does mention sodium batteries as a possible alternative to lithium. Maybe those will become a thing one day.
