Does Valve employ people at minimum wage? I’ve only heard good things about how much Valve employees make.
You know what was the original point right? About how Amazon makes its money off the backs of others being unfairly paid low wages.
And for arguments sake… I agree billionaires shouldn’t exist, and that any successful enterprise in a capitalist system is built on the exploitation of unfair wage distribution somewhere down the line (Steams could be it’s hard 30% fee); but I don’t think either of those were the implied point of the original post.
Steam also does things like distributing the game to players, keeping copies of it available, and paying for the network bandwidth for terabytes of data to be downloaded every single day.
I honestly do not get the hate against steam. 30% is a very reasonable cut of the profits in exchange for the service.
Only because this thread is what it is, YSK that Amazon owns Goodreads. I can never actually remember the ethical alternatives, but DDG recommends several, including the one with my favorite name of the bunch:

An ordinary family man, geologist, and Mormon, Soren Johansson has always believed he’ll be reunited with his loved ones in an eternal hereafter. Then, he dies. Soren wakes to find himself cast by a God he has never heard of into a Hell whose dimensions he can barely grasp: a vast library he can only escape from by finding the book that contains the story of his life. In this haunting existential novella, author, philosopher, and ecologist Steven L. Peck explores a subversive vision of eternity, taking the reader on a journey through the afterlife of a world where everything everyone believed in turns out to be wrong.
Doing the math with the salary of a major league sports player is also crazy to think about.
Earning the 2024 MLB average salary of 4.66 million USD per year, it’s 39,848 years.
There’s simply no way he’s contributed that much value to society.
