Funny how for years many iPad users (including me) asked Apple to create a shell/Terminal app for iPadOS. We were told that nobody cared, was unnecessary, no developer wanted to work on iPadOS anyway.

@viticci Yes, 100% this! Iโ€™m a very happy user of a-Shell on the iPad. Itโ€™s incredible at what it does. It shows how a first-party terminal app could fit into the platform as it stands, and if it had the imprimatur of the platform vendor, it would open up many opportunities.

@viticci What you say is that you want an open iPadOS, where you can install software outside of the apps and the App Store, not just a Terminal app.

If you want to use Claude Code on iPad, you can, just install their app.

But there are terminal apps? Do you mean you want to run one LOCAL not over ssh? You're looking for a Mac. If you want a touch screen you either need to sidecar to a Mac or indulge in the metric F ton of Windows/Linux options out there.

Meanwhile some of the newer Android tablets apparently offer a full Debian Linux development environment, if the deviceโ€™s hardware can support the Android Virtualisation Framework

You can use Claude code CLI as a provider in goose and then access goose on mobile via secure tunneling

@viticci Yes, please! One of the reasons I consider iPadOS less-than-pro is lack of a shell. SSH to a remote host is not a solution. It just means the iPad hardware remains underutilized.

@viticci the iPad is held back so much from being locked down. Itโ€™s just insane to put that powerful of a processor in it and not let people take advantage fully. Not everyone is editing videos or audio or creating art. Some of us would like to create apps

@viticci The lack of an AI agent on iPadOS is a huge downside, in my opinion. The gap between macOS and iPadOS has only grown wider. Claude Code (and its siblings) is the best thing to happen to PCs for power users since the web.
As far as Iโ€™m concerned, buying an iPad today, if youโ€™re even vaguely interested in vibe coding, is the wrong choice. Instead of improving, the iPad has suddenly fallen much further behind PCs than before.
