Yet another piece of evidence that computer science and engineering *specifically* are getting this terribly wrong

“I Felt Like I Completely Belonged in That Class”: Gender and the Development of Sense of Belonging in K-12 STEM Education - Educational Psychology Review

Most funding/efforts to broaden participation focus on STEM or general science, rather than specific CS and ENG. Given reduced opportunities for funding K-12 STEM education research, we need to focus efforts on the fields and specific groups of students for whom belonging is most threatened. (9/N)

The context collapse of CS and Eng into other fields that have diversified far more and have very different pathway patterns, shows the limitation of any analysis that just uses "STEM"

General reminder that I've developed multiple scales for sense of belonging on software teams specifically and every time they have been strong predictors for good team outcomes! If you want to use the open science lightweight versions of these on your teams I'm happy to grab a coffee.

(if you want to design a more complex project around that, Catharsis is taking calls out into March right now 🥰 )

Ok my coffee spot calendar has filled up rapidly, but catch my projects at https://www.drcathicks.com/projects

When I'm back to work in March I will be launching some new research resource pages that make it easy to find things like all my public scales!

I've also been meaning to write a "making your surveys better" post at FFTH, but I suspect it will be a lot of work and I've been in writing recovery since turning in my book! 😅 Nevertheless, look for it there

@grimalkina I’m interested in this. I’ve got a diverse and growing team, and want to do my best to have everyone feel part of it
@grimalkina I'd love to grab a drink and talk about your scales. I'm not in management but have definitely felt left out & insecure, so having some structure and language would be much appreciated
