Today's historic photo of the day: Melbourne SW6 class #tram no 963 on route 1 nears Graham Street in Victoria Avenue, Albert Park, Vic, November 1 1987.

Route 1 runs south from Coburg East via Nicholson Street Brunswick East, Lygon Street Carlton, Swanston Street Melbourne, Sturt and Park Streets, South Melbourne, Montague Street, Bridport Street and Victoria Avenue Albert Park to the South Melbourne Beach terminus (which is actually in Albert Park).

The tram here, whilst heading south, was nearing its terminus and, as was not uncommon, the driver had apparently already rolled the front desto around for the return journey north. The East Coburg Moreland desto signified that whilst this tram would run to East Coburg as a route 1, it was also functioning as a route 15 and it would connect at Moreland Road East Brunswick with a co-ordinated route 15 shuttle tram along Moreland Road to Moreland station.
No 963 is one of a fleet of 120 SW6 class trams built between 1939 and 1951. SW6 class trams, which were the first major class of Melbourne trams to feature driver-operated sliding doors as standard rather than open doors with canvas blinds, ran in regular service until 2013. Whilst none remain in original condition today, a handful have been upgraded to W8 class to operate the City Circle route. 963 was acquired in 2006 by the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria as a source of spare parts.
