We're once again having the recurring plumbing problem here in the cottages that once caused my shower to fill entirely with feces and toilet paper. I am concerned.
I just talked to the neighbors on either side of me. They've both been having problems with their plumbing backing up since yesterday. They didn't bother to contact the landlord. Why am I the only one around here who ever bothers to do that? Everyone else just assumes the plumbing will somehow fix itself.
@MLE_online I don't know your landlord, but from experience stuff will fix itself (or not) the same whether the landlord is contacted or not.
Here's hoping that's not the case in your situation!
@gigabecquerel It will not fix itself. Like I mentioned, when this went unaddressed another time, my whole shower filled with poop
@MLE_online I get that, I was just saying that contacting a landlord also doesn't fix things. At least not with the landlords I had, lol.
@gigabecquerel Bothering them will get this fixed, just not without an annoying amount of me having to bother them
@MLE_online Very annoying.
Good luck!
@MLE_online
Without knowing them personally, I suspect your neighbors are afraid of a rate increase should they bother the LL too much. Also, they could be thinking, "ya know, that Emily will hassle the LL for us."
@MLE_online
Since it affects multiple units, the problem is closer to the main sewer line. Is there a large tree nearby? Do you have expansive soil? Are the sidewalks cracked, pushed up, etc? You probably know where I'm going with this: busted sewer line due to tree roots.
@GilQ Oh yea, we know it's because tree roots have infiltrated the main sewer line. The plumbing backs up, we call the landlord, the plumber comes and cuts the roots out, the roots grow back, and the process repeats

@MLE_online @GilQ
Sounds like your cleanout may be comprised of terra cotta. Roots can penetrate that.

A one time replacement of pvc pipe should outlast your time there and fix the problem... but it may cost a bit.

@rayocentric @GilQ This is a 70-year-old rental managed by a cheap-ass landlord. They're not going to do that.
@MLE_online
I used to live in a terrace of cottages all connected to the septic tank behind my house. Our slum landlord who lived next to the terrace in a big posh house wasn't connected to that system.

Quite often the system would back up because some twat was throwing baby wipes down the toilet and our back garden would end up ankle deep in shit.

I decided to sort it myself and bought some drain rods.

Well I managed to clear it. What I didn't bet upon was a massive airlock that once dislodged caused a pressure wave to force itself back down the drain I was rodding from and cause an entire fountain of shit to come out absolutely covering me in months worth of human crap, baby wipes, tampons, towels and whatever else was stuck down there.

I was not impressed.

The landlord actually saw it from his garden too so I shouted "you fucking sort this out you cunt!" at him.

He eventually sorted it. And stole my drain rods.

@jamesb omg lol that's horrific.

The wipes!! People here flush wipes, too. Wipe companies should be fined for advertising them as flushable.

@MLE_online
I agree. We have the same problem here and despite regular notices and photos in the local news people still flush the fucking things.

At least I don't have to worry about it now. I live at the top of the hill...

@MLE_online "but, but other times if fixed itself!!"

Probably because you called the landlord those times :P
