What are some self-hostable apps that everyone recommends?
@sarah
Seems like everyone here should recommend Mastodon, I guess.
@sarah Off the top of my head: Forgejo, PeerTube, Mastodon, NextCloud, Moodle.
@sarah I'm running Nextcloud, Forgejo, OpenGist, and ZotRegistry, and considering GoToSocial. NC is a workhorse, as it's what backs my EnPass vault, Obsidian vaults, private music collection, ....
@mwop @sarah have you tried SeaFile? I've always liked it over NextCloud but NextCloud has some additional features - SeaFile is only for file storage.

@sarah in addition to the things others have sad:

@wallabag and Vaultwarden are recommended self hosted applications.

@tvbeek @sarah @wallabag vauldwarden is amazing!
@sarah I couldn't survive without @freshrss #FreshRSS and #Jellyfin
@paul @sarah @freshrss Ooh, thanks for the FreshRSS recommendation. Have been meaning to look for a local aggregator.
@sarah This feels old school but I run wordpress on my server and do all of my blogging through that. I love that I can use a WP extension to run my own URL shortener as well.
@scottjenson @sarah I used to run WordPress on my own server but now I run installs on a hosting service that gives me free rein to do whatever I want with it. Despite all the criticisms of Matt, I still think it's good software.
@sarah https://www.audiobookshelf.org/ is great for podcasts and audiobooks

@sarah if anyone is interested in the pain of running their own email server, a basic Debian Linux VPS with Postfix, Dovecot, Sieve, Spamassassin, and MariaDB works really well.

Recommend reading all about it in "Run Your Own Mail Server" by @mwl

@sarah Been setting up an Intel N100 minipc over the last couple of weeks with *arr apps, Plex (got it before Jellyfin was a thing and just stuck with it). I run pfSense at home as a router (really should switch that out as well at some point), have a Truenas box.

All internal ips sit behind subdomains with SSL managed by cloudflare and nginx-proxy-manager.

It all runs through docker containers in a compose file.

@sarah if youโ€™re looking for some nice low code stuff (alternative to ifttt or zapier), n8n is pretty great. Itโ€™s got connectors to a ton of stuff and easy to extend. Home assistant too depending on your needs.

@sarah Lately:

Healthchecks.io - easy to install, easy to track your cron jobs

Uptime Kuma - cute and easy to track uptime

Postiz - Higher level, and with some oddities, but a decent way to auto-post to the socials without paying some ICE snivvliing ass like Hootsuite (missing MANY features but still)

@sarah Nextcloud changed my life. Fantastic stuff
@sarah pihole. As an ad blocker itโ€™s pretty basic compared to other hosted apps but very helpful on desktop and especially mobile
