Popped into Tesco in town earlier for our annual #SingleMalt #whisky shop in time for #BurnsSupper tomorrow, I always go one peaty/Islay and one smooth/Speyside — doesn't necessarily need to be geographically exactly from those locations, it's more of a flavour guideline. I have a preference for the peaty stuff (I miss the days of Lagavulin 16 being easily available, and somewhat affordable) but for a whisky sauce and to go with the haggis I prefer the non-peated whisky, with the peated one for afters/"dessert".

It's funny how the Tesco/supermarket whisky range has changed in the span of my 20 years in the UK. It used to be many of the big classic "age" specified brands. Now days they're mostly gone and it's all weird special releases and a lot harder to have a feeling for what it is you're buying. When you like whisky but you only buy 2 or 3 bottles a year it's a little stressful trying to pick something out.

Opted for a balance of affordability and safety in the end. With a 10yo Talisker and a 12yo Arberlour… I'm sure they will do just fine.

In an ideal world I'd make more audacious choices from some good independent seller. But my world is far from an ideal one.

In other Tesco news it's already fucking EASTER... there was an entire end-to-end aisle side of this chocolate easter bullshit.
@yvan I've gotten used to some kinds of Christmas sweets abundantly available by the end of summer but no longer before Christmas, but Easter chocolates in the dead of winter, that's almost disorienting.
Fucking hell, I've just seen what a bottle of Talisker 18 costs these days.
@yvan If I'd saved all the bottles of aged whisky and cognac I drank in my younger years I could probably sell them and retire. But if I got the chance to do it all again I'd still drink it. I can't afford that quality now.
@yvan They are fine choices. I've lined up Balvenie Caribbean Cask 🙂
@yvan We used to get Smokehead a fair bit because it’s very *very* peaty, it was nice.
@yvan those are still decent malts. You should try mixing them equal parts, then let it sit for atleast 30 mins. Shooould give you best of both worlds.
@ahpadt yeah, they're fine! Interesting idea on the blending, it's not something I have ever considering doing but I don't see why not so I'll give that a go. Adds a whole other dimension.
