I used to listen with good headphones, and my finger on the Pause button.
I was usually able to pick out the extra "fader up" hiss (on the presenter's mic channel) or the tape hiss from the cart, just before the jingle started, over the (slightly different) hiss of an FM stereo signal.
All analogue.
