@CCC That is wonderful!
I would add to it: and the production of almost all the digital devices you use today relies on optics by Zeiss and the production lines from ASML.
Zeiss (from Germany) is owned by the Zeiss Foundation that has the express goal to ensure the longevity of Zeiss and further scientific progress. But not profit.
ASML (from the Netherlands) was founded from Philips that is the source of so many tech innovations that don’t bear its name (including NXP) but carry its legacy.
@Hammerwell I don’t consider it as sad: those inventions lived on -- often in companies founded from Philips -- and Philips could focus on breaking more ground.
@Hammerwell Or they realized that they weren’t good at producing and selling at scale, so they sold it to people who were -- and continued to do what they were good at.
You can see that as missing instinct for business.
Or you can see it as focusing on their strengths and honing their abilities.
When people still do the job there for which they joined 20 years ago, then it’s a success.
When people lost their jobs because of that, that means that some parts have failed.

@Hammerwell ⇒ the architect looks with pride at all the construction companies who use the newly created design to provide good housing.
As long as the architect can continue working as architect and focus on the craft, that’s success.
Maybe no one becomes rich in the process. But all get better at their craft.
