I didn't anticipate hailing Ben Affleck as an astute critic of AI. There are parallels for software developers. The ability to write an effective function or even a whole subsystem is not comparable to writing an app. Great apps require an epic amount of human editing, just like great films do. https://www.threads.com/@forrestpknight/post/DTnlnzAjuAb

Honestly, Ben Affleck actually knowing AI and the landscape caught me off guard, but as a writer, makes sense. Great takes across the board.

@danielpunkass I think there is a difference in perspective on what a “great app” is: engineers want something that works of course, but they also want elegance, efficiency, easy to maintain code, etc, while users just want an app that works and is easy to use.

@danielpunkass AI abstracts the user away from complexity. I think we are at the point where no one really cares about the “how”, just the “what”.

Any argument that proposes cost as an obstacle is living in denial: it's like 1900s blacksmiths arguing that cars won’t take off any time soon as the cost of building roads will be prohibitive.

The argument that AI is here for our benefit is nonsense. It's about cutting operating costs and transferring more profit to the already wealthy.

@tenjinuk @danielpunkass IMO people massively underestimate how desperately techbro billionaires want to rid themselves of "little people problems." They will do *anything* to not have to deal with people-shit. Including war, theft, fascism, dictatorship, living remotely on islands or yachts, ANYTHING. IMO.

@danielpunkass and @drahardja

Thanks I had no idea. Thoughtful, intelligent and well informed

@danielpunkass Affleck is a smart, capable guy. He deserves a lot of praise.

@danielpunkass Interesting that you read this as a critic. I guess, it's critical of the Industrial AI Hype Machine, but for AI itself I read this as incredibly moderate/pro-AI take.

I use AI every day and he's saying pretty much the exact thing I think.

@joshhunt I am using the word “critic” here in a less loaded sense. For instance a film critic might love a film.
