Does it have to be heel up always? #drumming
@PeterPractice No. 🙂
Practice both heel up and heel down. Imho heel down is strong for:
a. Playing at low to medium volume.
b. Feathering the bass drum.
c. Most comping techniques.
Many heel-up drummers bury the beater (i.e. leave it on the bass drum head until the next kick), which might not be the sound you want.
For hard and heavy rock music that demands a loud (and often fast) bass drum, I would indeed always go heel up, but apply a technique that allows the beater to bounce back a bit.
@hermandreas Thanks for your insights, make sense to me. I have a Roland kit (electronic) and I am lazy, means my feet rest on the ground, heels included. Will consider your tips.
@PeterPractice Heel down is also my preference and I agree to those who say that it gives more control over volume and feel. (Did you know that the great JR Robinson is a heel down player?)
