President Donald Trump plans to pardon former Puerto Rico Gov. Wanda Vázquez, a White House official said. The official who confirmed the planned pardon on Friday wasn’t authorized to reveal the news by name and spoke on the condition of anonymity. Vázquez pleaded guilty last August to a campaign finance violation in a federal case that authorities say also involved a former FBI agent and a Venezuelan banker. Her sentencing was set for later this month. Federal prosecutors had been seeking one year behind bars. Vázquez was the U.S. territory’s first former governor to plead guilty to a crime, specifically accepting a donation from a foreigner for her 2020 political campaign.

The woman, Adriana Camberos, was initially convicted in 2017 for her role in a scheme to sell millions of #counterfeit bottles of the caffeinated drink 5-Hour Energy.

After Camberos’ sentence was #commuted by #Trump in 2021, she was #convicted again in 2024 in an unrelated #fraud. When she was pardoned in the new case this week, it marked the second time Trump had opened the #prison gates for her.

The #pardons, most of which have not been previously reported, were supported by people with close ties to Trump’s orbit, including lawyers who had previously worked for him.

3 of the recipients were scheduled to be #sentenced this month in a political #corruption case related to accusations that #JulioHerreraVelutini, a Venezuelan-Italian banker, had tried to bribe former Gov #WandaVazquez of #PuertoRico in 2020.

In late 2024, while Herrera was facing #felony charges in the case, his daughter, Isabela Herrera, donated $2.5 million to #MAGA Inc., a #superPAC devoted to #Trump & run by his allies.
