On the night on 9 January 2011, I went to the movies and saw Tron: Legacy.
I didn't get home. With local flooding, I slept in the car at the Oakey Railway Station.

On the morning of 10 January 2011, I woke up and drove to Jondaryan. There I stop again because the Warrego Highway, to the west, was still closed.
I slept a couple of hours. When I awoke, the highway had been reopen and I drive home.
In the early afternoon, a storm front moved over the north eastern Darling Down and Lockyer Valley.
The resulting flooding killed 4 across Toowoomba, 12 in Grantham, and 22 over all that day.
I drove the old Warrego the day before, coming from Bris.

It was a Thursday, I started my first paid IT jobs. It was a group start, 15 young fresh faced IT grads.
New Parliament House in Canberra was still lots of cranes. Stayed at Macquarie Hostel, initially. Built in 1969*, closed [and redeveloped] in the early naughties.
40 years! Did I say I feel really old.
* back when, when there was market failure, the government would create supply itself.

18 Jan 2003 was a Saturday, fires had been burning out in the Brindabella range since 8 Jan. Heat and high winds brought the fires into Canberra's western urban interface.
At the time, I was living in North Lyneham. I had a lunchtime appointment in the Tuggeranong town centre.

Coming back got interesting. By ~3pm, I got back to the Tuggeranong Parkway/Sulwood Dr corner, it was dark. All smoke but no fire in sights. Traffic light cycling normally. So I drive north to Hindmarch Dr, minutes after a firefront burnt up the west flank of Mt Taylor!!!
Needless to say, I got off the Parkway at Hindmarch & drive the rest of the way thought urban cores.
The start of an interesting week.
I remember big firefighting choppers parked overnight on Amaroo Oval too

Back to 1986, again. Forty years today.
28 January that year was a Tuesday.
Less that two week after I started me first paid IT job, I was of evening shift at the production computer centre in South Canberra. Left work after midnight.
Wake about 9am on the 29th, local time to news of the lose of the Challenger. Went and found a TV, and wait for any news bulletins.
A sad day. Had quiet a few late nights in late high school and Uni watching scrubbed and actual launches.
