Stop saying "everyone" if your concept of "everyone" doesn't include disabled people who aren't able to do paid work: difficulty level impossible, apparently 🫩

Yes, we are part of everyone! No, we won't be doing a year of paid retail work. No, that doesn't mean we can't empathise with and support retail workers, just as we can empathise with and support all kinds of people who experience things we don't experience.

I really should just mute the phrase "everyone should", shouldn't I? 😅

@3TomatoesShort

I saw a meme a few days back that said something like 'if you haven't tripped over tree roots, can you really say you've been hiking', and I was too tired to post how ableist this was

@chestas @3TomatoesShort but also that's just not an inherent part of hiking. I don't think I've ever tripped over tree roots and I've hike a lot.
My friend who I've dragged with me on occasion though has tripped over them loads.

It's just... not a definitive part of hiking.

@alexisbushnell @3TomatoesShort

I walk with my wife who has fibromyalgia. If she tripped on a tree root, it could be dangerous for her. We walk slowly, usually taking twice as long to finish a trail as the guidebooks will estimate. We do see a lot, and we never miss our step. My wife is a Druid, and is probably more aware of trees and their roots than those who trip over them

@3TomatoesShort if you need to do a year of retail work to have compassion for retail workers I think you have bigger problems that actually need a therapist.

It is possible to empathise and be compassionate to someone without having experienced what they have. The fact so many people don't seem to be doing that is terrifying to me.
