sigh, I don't want to start over!

If a new chat can reference previous chats, why isn't there an option (with caveats and explanations if necessary) to simply keep going? Claude Code can run /compact over and over and still be quite effective, why is the chat app so far behind?

@ted Hmm, I have definitely seen compaction happening in the desktop app since at least November. There is even a special UI with a progress bar. It happens all the time when developing MCP servers because it's easy to blow up the context window.

@kyle I can't say I've seen that, need to watch more closely I guess - where is the ui shown?

I believe you that it's there, so is this hard stop message only shown after N compaction runs now? Do you not see it at all since Nov?

I have seen this hard stop most often when using MCP servers from the app, and I did use the google drive mcp a handful of times in this chat (assembling a timeline of purchase/support dates and drafting a request for warranty replacement of a grilling accessory)

@ted It's shown where a new message from Claude would show up, with some italic explanation. I have indeed not seen a conversation end due to length in months. However, it looks like Anthropic has been having outages over the last 24 hours and people are reporting this issue around reddit.
