Delta Chat

#deltachat does

- no bindings to public handles/numbers

- no address-book upload

- not do public contact or group discovery

- not have critical persistent server state (!)

Social identification is private, between people though ephemeral #P2P #E2EE messages.

Servers see messages with random sender and recipient addresses, but those can not be mapped to a phone number or public handle. Servers see IP addresses. But you can use Tor, or a VPN, if you want to hide that.

It' not all bad :)

@delta I used it a little bit now for testing and so far it works quite well for private messaging - although I noticed by design the use case seems to be for communicating with people you already know, right? Like public online community chats like irc or matrix does not seem to be in scope if I understand it correctly? (hence no public delta chat group exists, I assume?)

@sunshine Ich mag deren Konzept sehr, aber die sind leider noch weiter entfernt von Feld-, Wald- und Wiesennutzer*innen als Signal und Threema.

@der_schrank bei mir macht signal mehr probleme. Was sind denn deine probleme bei delta chat die es "weit entfernt" von signal machen?
Auserdem: Signal ist in den usa, hat zentralisierte server, und hat als identifer allen ernstes immer noch eine handynummer die in deutschland standartmäßig an den Personalausweis gekoppelt ist. Und es ist nur ein account möglich pro app. Also wenn in der eu die staaten mal zuschlagen wollen wäre ich besorgt @sunshine

@lucy_idk @sunshine Das weiß ich ja alles und ich würde es auch gerne nutzen, aber dazu müssen meine Peers es auch nutzen. Signal und Konsorten sind mittlerweile halbwegs bekannt, Delta kennen nur wir Nerds (und da auch schon viele nicht)

Eine Chat-App ohne Peers ist sinnlos, so gut sie auch ist. Das ist das alte Problem. Ich könnte maximal meine engste Familie noch zu Delta bringen, aber ich hatte schon Probleme, sie auf Signal zu bringen.

@der_schrank zustimmung. Das ist aber nicht ein problem von delta chat, sondern den menschen in deiner umgebung. Hatte verstanden dir fehlt was oder du kritisierst was an der app :) @sunshine

In theory, yes. Unless you happen to pick a relay which for some reason blocks Tor, but they're so cheap to run and spam-resistant that there's no reason to block Tor.
