The International Mathematical Union (IMU) removed the 2022 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) from St. Petersburg because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But it appears the 2026 ICM is going ahead in Philadelphia in July despite the attacks by the USA military in the Caribbean and in Venezuala, threats of military action in Greenland and Panama, denial of visas to visiting academics, etc. Seems a double-standard to me.

#ICM2026

@DavidWood I wouldn't be surprised if the congress begins with a ceremony renaming Pythagoras' theorem to Trump's theorem, and him being awarded a Fields medal.
@DavidWood I'm no fan of Trump either, but there is a difference between overthrowing a dictator, not acknowledged by any democratic country, and starting a war. Just for comparison, after the Russians started the conflict in 2014 at a smaller scale, the IMU was not removed yet, though we can certainly debate whether it should have been. Just to clarify, I'm not trying to argue whether IMU 2026 should be removed or not; I'm merely stating that I see no double standards.
@domotorp My post was not intended to suggest that the Russian and USA actions were equivalent. My main point is that it is inappropriate for the IMU to hold the 2026 ICM in the USA at this time, and that the 2022 ICM is a historical precedent.
