I remember watching TV shows back in the 80’s and it was a common trope to have the main character in some war zone in a foreign country somewhere when they get into strife with people pointing guns at them and they’d throw their arms in the air and say “Don’t shoot! I’m an American!!”

That probably wouldn’t work nowadays.

@dgar
nope, it is no longer a shield.
@SnowyCA if it ever was outside of Hollywood.
@dgar
not likely, eh. That's one of their problems, they believe the Hollywood myths.

@SnowyCA @dgar If only John Wayne was still alive - they'd send him to kick Greenland's arse, lol! After all, he's the only yank I can think of that's always won the battle!

I've always said it regarding their behaviour internationally - half of american males believe they *are* John Wayne.....oddly enough, though, Mr Wayne never cleared up the mess he left behind him either 🤔.

John Wayne was a coward!🇺🇸
" the combat veterans present during his USO tours in the 1940s were furious with his presence, booing the Duke and jeering as he took the stage. In their eyes, Wayne was a coward and a draft dodger who chose Hollywood stardom over joining the war effort.
When it comes down to brass tacks, John Wayne is nothing more than an opportunistic bigot that has been undeservedly iconized by American culture. "

How WWII Set The Stage For John Wayne's Rise To Superstardom - SlashFilm

He saw an opportunity to cement his claim to fame.

@SnowyCA @dgar Interesting article! I knew he became extremely right wing in later years, but I didn't realise how he actually got so big - I assumed he was an A-lister pre WWII, not using it to further his personal wealth.

Trump's inspiration, perhaps? After all, he *acts* tough and uses his position to further *his* personal wealth.

@Oyu_Fka @dgar
Back in the day, among WWII veterans it was general knowledge John Wayne was a coward. My family fought during the war, that's why I haven't watched any of his movies, even to this day.

I suppose it's possible he liked Wayne but I think he prefers to model himself more like Hitler, but who really knows what goes on inside that diseased brain.

@SnowyCA

I'm pretty sure he models himself after anybody at all who is awful and yet popular and/or powerful. He knows he is awful, and he wants to be popular and powerful, so he cribs from them incessantly.

@Oyu_Fka @dgar

@SnowyCA @Oyu_Fka @dgar It’s interesting the article doesn’t even get into why he got into acting to begin with. He had a body surfing accident when he was younger and injured his back. Acting was easier than labor. It was also the reason for his peculiar gait. I suspect all that had a lot more influence on the deferment, but Hollywood couldn’t leak out that their star leading man had a bad back.

Wayne is often cited as the tough guy American image but, if you actually watch his films, his characters consistently stick up for the little guy or the underdog. In essence, he protected the weak. How that gets missed is surprising.

All that said, Wayne was still a racist and misogynistic piece of shit, as were a lot of white men of that era. There’s no excuse for that.

@FeloniousPunk @Oyu_Fka @dgar
Yes he did injure his shoulder while surfing but afterwards he insisted on performing all the physical stunts so, I'm sorry, that was no excuse for not joining up, especially when men were lying about their health , taking steps to hide their issues from the doctors so they could go overseas.
@SnowyCA @Oyu_Fka @dgar I 💯 agree. Don’t get me wrong. He definitely should have been in the fight.

Thank you for taking the time to search for the lyrics. : )

There's a lot of truth in that song.
@LordCaramac @dgar

@SnowyCA @LordCaramac @dgar you're welcome! Tbh, I struggle to hear lyrics clearly too....it's you gave me the idea 👍!

@Oyu_Fka @LordCaramac

I've been somewhat hearing impaired since childhood and over the past few years I lost a lot more. borderline profoundly deaf now.

@dgar

@SnowyCA @LordCaramac @dgar Sorry to hear that....I'm nowhere near deaf, just have tinnitus....which isn't a problem unless there is background noise, other voices, machinery, music, etc - then I can't understand a word anyone says, or, as in this case, a lyric sung ☹️.

@Oyu_Fka
I have that as well. Annoying as all get out especially while trying to sleep. You as well?

@LordCaramac @dgar

@SnowyCA @LordCaramac @dgar No...not so far, anyway. Tbh, I've never had a problem with sleep - I could fall asleep standing up, lol!

@Oyu_Fka
You're quite fortunate.

It doesn't prevent me from falling asleep, but often wakes me after a couple hours
.@LordCaramac @dgar

@SnowyCA @LordCaramac @dgar Yes, you're right. A lot of the time, I don't particularly notice it - more pronounced, sometimes louder, when I'm sat in relative silence, but always an irritation in conversation with background sounds.

@Oyu_Fka @LordCaramac @dgar

Indeed hearing loss is most problematic in noisy rooms and areas.
