Not really an audiobook person usually: I can never quite figure out how to listen. (Same problem with podcasts: there just aren’t many occasions where I can listen to something and pay attention to it, but also can’t/won’t read.)

But I got a three month free trial of Audible so I decided I might as well give it a go. I can’t really figure out how the subscription model is meant to work (it’s a weird mix of subscription and purchase), but it includes one free book a month. (And since it’s free I’m not so worried if they’re locked into Amazon — I wouldn’t spend money on it though.)

Anyway, I decided to give the Lord of the Rings a go and it’s been pretty enjoyable. It’s narrated by Andy Serkis, who’s pretty good at it: nice speaking voice, different voices for different characters, etc.

@benjamineskola Audible actually has great quality books. I really hope they don't start using AI to narrate.

Also, as someone who pays for books at Audible, they're absolutely not locked in. You can download them, convert them to a sane format, and keep them in a personal library. Also, I kinda dislike Audible's player, so this gives me an option to use a different one.

@petrol interesting to know! To be honest I wouldn’t know what other player to use, but if I do end up continuing to listen to audiobooks after these three are done that’s a positive sign.
