Stuuuuu Skinner has won 3-in-a-row, 1 goal against in each
Jarry was hurt in his 3rd game & out *a few more weeks*
Pretty good trade in my book, not even counting $$$

@jimlil As an Oilers fan I was not /am not happy that management caved to outside pressure on Skinner. Now I’m enjoying watching him thrive with the Pens (and not enjoying watching Oilers stumble —it’s getting better, but Skinner was never the problem). Meanwhile, Jarry, who may be a fine goalie, is hurt.

Jarry can be great, but he was never there when we needed him.
I would have taken a sack of pucks back to dump his horrible contract. Sorry
@hanspetermeyer
Only gave up 1 in a loss yesterday. I'm excited to have Stuuuuuu here

@jimlil Oilerville doesn’t know what we had. Wishing Skinner, Pens, and Pens fans lots of luck. I’m hoping it’s not a Pens v Oilers SCF! (Though that would be just desserts)

@hanspetermeyer @jimlil @hnom It's a dangerous game blaming it on the goalie.
Yes. Jets fans will know this trope all too well. I believe Stan Bowman was right when he said last year that a team like the Oilers doesn’t need “elite” goaltending to win the Cup. The flip side is that even elite goaltending is often not enough to win a Cup. Some have said recently that hockey should be called “Goale,” because the position is so important. I too think it’s important, but I don’t think it’s THAT important. This is team sport. Winning happens when the team plays to win (& has the benefit of the bounces etc —the luck— that may be the critical component of every team’s Stanley Cup success. @mike @jimlil

@hanspetermeyer @mike @jimlil @hnom I agree with you entirely.

Even elite goaltending lets a puck or two in.

You can lose 1-0 just as hard as 5-4.

If your defense is allowing situations to develop that threaten high quality goals, the eliteness of your goaltender matters less and less.

If your offense isn't generating goals, your goaltender isn't going to put goals on the board.

It's a team effort regardless of your goaltender. (...and trust me, I know how important the role is!)

@hanspetermeyer @jimlil @hnom Puck luck is so insanely important. The ten game losing streak that effectively ended the Jets season were almost all one goal games.

The old hockey proverb: You have to be good to be lucky and lucky to be good.

@hanspetermeyer
Easy to say until you don't have a dependable goalie.
I realize it wasn't the only reason the Pens missed the playoffs the last 3 years, but it was the main one.
@jimlil Apologies Jim, as I'm rarely on any form of social media these days, so my replies are very late.
As for "dependable goalies," maybe that's an oxymoron? Maybe not. But given how little separates these players from top to bottom. I mean, a few percentage points over a season can mean multiple wins/losses —or not, depending on how effective your D&F group are. There's a reason PDO is defined as a measure of luck: adding SH% and SV% to arrive at whether a team is performing at a reasonable level? Both stats are so susceptible to bounces good and bad.
I'm of a mind to let the goalies off the hook almost entirely. Or at least as much as any D or F. I really thnk we should be giving ghe same consideration as we give pitchers in BB: expect them to have runs of "success/failure"; expect to relieve them; acknowledge that it's the toughest, most visible position; dial back the expectations.
@hanspetermeyer
No matter what, I believe you will definitely be regretting this trade next year and especially the year after that

@jimlil It’s my only disappointment with GM Stan Bowman so far, that he placated Oilerville and it’s irrational demand to “solve the goalie problem.”
As for regretting the trade, I regretted it the moment it was made, Dec 12. How well will it age? That should come clear this spring as both Penguins and Oilers look to be heading for the playoffs, with “new” goalies in net. One goalie with an impressive playoff (and especially clutch game) WIN%, the other not so much.
