50 years ago tonight in palo alto, the last of two shows by the jerry garcia band as half-accidental backing combo for piano genius james booker, a loose cannon’s loose canon, band sometimes sounding as if they’re learning songs on the fly. audience tape: https://archive.org/details/jg76-01-10.008077.jgjb.aud.cook.sbeok.t-flac16

1/10/76 sophie’s: last JGB takes of CLASSIFIED, UNITED OUR THING WILL STAND (delightful NoLA piano shuffle), GOODNIGHT IRENE, dr. john’s RIGHT PLACE WRONG TIME (with bit of HOUND DOG), jazzy YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE, JUNCO PARTNER, & DROWN IN MY OWN TEARS; only versions of last 4. 17-minute SLOWLY BUT SURELY is melancholic jazz (sharing common line with I KNOW YOU RIDER), not far from RUSSIAN LULLABY, but garcia doesn’t get much blowing room. bright ROAD RUNNER B3. #garciafreaksunite #jg011076 [2/2]
@bourgwick I read that Booker traveled to the Bay Area thinking it was his gig, not Garcia’s band. Ramshackle rehearsal and performance, but I’m a huge Booker fan so I dig it.
