Sub-$50 Goodwill score. I think I’m becoming a typewriter guy.
@andrew Can't go wrong with an Underwood, can you?

@andrew

maybe some of it is who i follow and my own interests but seems like folks are getting tired of disposable/crappy things, things that you pay a subscription for but can go away at any time, taking what's offered rather than having what you bought & paid for. folks getting into vintage sewing machines, typewriters, CDs/vinyl/cassettes, fountain pens.

it's nice having a well crafted item you can have an organic and analog, enjoyable experience with.

have fun with your new find!

@paul_ipv6 I absolutely agree -- both w/r/t seeing it in others and feeling it myself. I swapped out my Apple Watch for a manual watch. Tech has its place in my life (quite obviously), but its nice to create little sanctuaries of analog.
@andrew That thing is a beauty
@phillycodehound Sounds great too. From the metallic clacks of the keys to the bell on the carriage.
@andrew
These are generally used to write small bits of bespoke poetry on card stock at farmer's markets. There might be other applications.
@thezerobit I certainly hope so, no one will be reading (much less buying) my poetry.
@andrew that is a lovely machine!
@vwdasher The black on gold is/was a timeless choice.
@andrew Went to a dirt-poor school, and we had these on which to learn typing. Talk about developing finger strength!
@dasparky Curious, did they teach you home row etc. despite the pressure required for the key presses? I've been hunting and pecking.
@andrew oh yeah. Watched to make sure you weren't peeking, too (goal was to make us all touch typists).

@andrew

That's a beauty.

My family had one of those. Sadly it disappeared sometime over the years.

@f800gecko It might be this one!

@andrew

There's a cover for the ribbon spools - do you have that?

@f800gecko I do not. To eBay I guess?
@andrew
Interesting "back spacer" top left. And you'll have to type a lower case L if you need the number 1
@andrew I’m increasingly tempted… at least your typed words are harder to spy on than any computing device.
@andrew You have no ribbon, but how's the action?
@JigmeDatse I popped a ribbon on it and took it for a test type. Action seems fine, but the type is very hit or miss in terms of legibility. I am going to start by cleaning the strikers with alcohol and see how far that gets me. I fear it's the dried out platen that is the main cause.

@andrew

That's beautiful! If I saw it at my thrift store, I'd become a typewriter guy, too. I love "SHIFT KEY" instead of just "SHIFT," as if the typist needs to be reminded that it's a key or is following an instructional manual that directs them to find the shift key.

@stevebutman They felt "TYPEWRITER SHIFT KEY" would have been overboard.

@andrew

Also hard to fit. πŸ˜‰
