Again, like I always told you - there is a not even secret history of this country, that Very Serious PeopleTM simply don't acknowledge or talk about, that would make most of the things in your life as American make more sense if you knew it.

It's not like you see in the movies, this history isn't hidden by shadowy assassins and evil spies - they simply do not talk about it and marginalize anyone who does, but you can buy whole books about all the evil shit we do that are totally accurate.

One part of that secret history is "the GOP and SCOTUS stole the 2000 election and nobody remembers because they almost immediately afterwards launched the War on Terror illegally and under false pretenses."

Nobody who knows what they are talking about seriously doubts that fact. But you can't say it, they will never acknowledge it, and so life goes on as if they kept the secret. They didn't. They just made discussing it toxic.

@AnarchoNinaWrites obv fuck Chomsky, the quote is still a good description of the state of affairs though

β€œThe smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum.”

@AnarchoNinaWrites Been there. I remember trying to teach my twenty-something friends basic anti-capitalist and feminist ideas, and they used social shaming to reject them entirely.

A few years ago, one of those friends said, "How were you right about *all* this stuff!?"

Gratifying. But it took 20 years.

@AnarchoNinaWrites W used the "equal protection" clause to argue that different counties had different procedures for counting votes (newsflash: yup. every fucking county in the country has its own vote counting procedures).

And the 5-4 remedy: was to simply stop recounting votes.

I personally was more confused than anything that no major fuss was made about these things. Back then: I had no idea how so MANY big (corp owned*)outlets just ignored this. I got over it.

*shoulda clued me in

@AnarchoNinaWrites

I've said before that the 9/11 attacks were staggeringly successful in resulting in the acceleration of the fall of the US empire on the global stage. It thrust a spear into the heart of the great beast and it's been staggering since.

But if that was a spear, things like the stolen 2000 election have been a million poison-dipped razor blades.

For real. Even up here in Canada. Bring it up...no one will shout you down. They'll smile. They'll nod. One or two might acknowledge the reality...

Then on to new business. And guess who won't be invited back?

That's how it works.
