@mook @glitzersachen @kkarhan Well, light bulbs that live forever were already invented. The industry agreed to not sell any light bulbs over 600 Wh (that number is from memory, so unsure if thats still true).

Companies don't provide the consumer with the best product for the consumer. Otherwise dealing with printers would be less expensive and less painful.

Tho Lasers are the least sucky printers...

@kkarhan @mook @glitzersachen Printer Ink is sold more expensive than human blood. 1 ink cartidge has like 2-3 ml (in the past it was 20 ml). So 1L is sold for over 2000 €.

Then there are arguments like: You don't just pay for the ink but for the electronics on the cartridge too.
The electronics that voids the warranty or rejects inks from other brands. The electronics that stop you from refilling the ink.

The consumer has to pay for it.

(Laser Printers are better but still not perfect)

@0xIO32 @kkarhan @mook @glitzersachen except (color) laser printers watermark everything they print with imperceptible faint yellow ink so feds can immediately know who printed something, so i'd avoid those...
@AquaFan @0xIO32 @mook @glitzersachen just don't have colour installed or use a printer that doesn't print an MIC for anything sensitive and espechally don't hand it over to #snitches like @theintercept that betray sources like #RealityWinner
Printer tracking dots - Wikipedia

@kkarhan @AquaFan @mook @glitzersachen @theintercept Awareness of the public 24 years later according to Wikipedia. Still the first time I have heard of MIC in printers, so thanks for the info.

@0xIO32 @AquaFan @mook @glitzersachen @theintercept np.

The original idea is basically going in-hand with #OmronRings: Trying to trace #CounterfeiltMoney and making it easy to detect copies.

  • It's also done to enshure generational degrading of copies & scans.

@kkarhan @AquaFan @mook @glitzersachen @theintercept Is there like a good modern open firmware printer?
@0xIO32 @kkarhan @mook @glitzersachen @theintercept this is an issue that i would love to see someone who's much more tech savvy than myself take on. unfortunately i don't have a workaround, outside of not printing in color, but i keep hoping to see someone either start selling anti-surveillance printers, or develop a method to counter the dots, by, like adding more little yellow dots in every printed document, to make them unreadable, or something like that...

@AquaFan @0xIO32 @mook @glitzersachen @theintercept you could use yellow paper or just print B&W-only.with only black ink installed.

  • Works with my machine (#deskjet6122 - which refuses to die)!
