#Introduction

Hi, I'm Mary (they/them)! I'm an interdisciplinary Environmental Science undergrad and webmaster who wants to work as a science communicator.

Science, writing, and community are my passions. I want to make scientific information accessible to non-scientific folks.

I'm not sure what I'll post about yet. Perhaps some natural photography, highlights on environmental projects/products/groups, and comments on the world around me.

This is my second instance.

@maryseph Boosting for you. Welcome to the Fediverse. And environmental sciences! That's awesome. I'm an environmental engineer, been doing it for...wow, almost 19 years.

Good luck in your studies. Hope you enjoy it here as you figure out what you like to post here on Mastodon.

@mdmrn Hi 👋🏼 , happy to meet someone with experience! May I ask what you're currently doing and what you like about it? :)

And thank you!

@maryseph Certainly! I'm an environmental director at a company that is redeveloping a large former industrial factory into a modern industrial park. i.e. turn an old brownfields facility due to past contamination from the old factory into a facility which is safely usable for a modern industrial park (largely warehousing).

My day to day job spans everything from tracking our facility discharges (stormwater, local WWTP), to coordinating with our construction team to ensure construction is done in accordance with environmental regs, to developing plans for stormwater management, to working in direct remediation of historic contamination.

There's a LOT going on in the environmental fields. From tracking and monitoring to permitting to the assorted stuff I do

@maryseph What I have enjoyed about it is that it was so different and varied than what I was expecting. My degrees are in chemical engineering (BS, MS) with my Masters thesis being very heavy into biochemistry. So, I expected to do something related to that when I got out. Nope.

My first job doing environmental work, I was involved in developing spill prevention plans, stormwater management plans, and permitting. Jobs after that led me to learn more about direct remediation of historic environmental contamination and the different technologies used to do so.

It's been a journey! There's a lot to explore in this field, which is cool.

@mdmrn Thank you for sharing! And apologies for the extra late reply. I really appreciate the long reply!

Glad to hear there's still a lot of freedom in the environmental field. It's something that I really value in professional work as I love learning about new things. Spent sometime making a list of interests to toot after this intro to keep track of them.

@maryseph Oh neat!

And absolutely no problem or need to apologize. Life happens. And glad you appreciate the long post. Wasn't sure if it was too much! I have been doing this a long while, so I've done a lot of different things all across the US.
