2026: The year the western left went full mask off.

“Objectively good guys”

“I want the exact opposite for the white guys.”
Not leftists. Liberals.
TBH Bernie pretty much said this and almost all AmeriKKKans think of him as a “leftist”, but I agree that he is also a liberal. The actual AmeriKKKan left is very small, and even then quite a few are this way (for example, many factions of the DSA).
Yeah I don’t really respect the political opinions of most Americans enough to label them as they self describe. Those of us in the rest of the world are still going to use the words that properly describe what the ideology is.
American leftists cannot imagine a world that isn’t totally dominated by capitalist imperialism or one that isn’t ruled by capitalist elites, where the wealth has been removed from these evils so they cannot exert control over the masses, so they wont even entertain the idea of “maybe everything doesn’t have to be done in the most evil fucking way possible.”
Leftists from the Global South are the moral compass of our world
Even the analysis by much of the actual US left has been quite lacking around this imo. The primary line seems to be that this is bad because the actions of the US are imperialist and warmongering which is absolutely true, but it sort of just ends there. There seems to be a shying away from the actual specific conditions of Venezuela and it’s relationship to the US. Instead of solidarity for Venezuelan socialism the best the left here seems to muster is “we shouldn’t bomb you because that’s wrong for obscure reasons”. It just seems hollow and maybe even harder to build a long term movement around.
It’s the imperial core and people might be scared, yes, but avoiding the fact that Venezuela has popular support, communes set up, and has been under siege? Not even trying to convince others?
It seems like the more ML aligned groups are talking about these things at least but they’re definitely not part of the dominant narrative here.
  • I get the sentiment here - that Westerners might have some blind spots about ideas of sovereignty, etc., but…
  • Having lived in the “Global South” for so long and lived here in the West for a couple of years too, I’ve met leftists from both hemispheres (?). I can assure you that we are just as heterogeneous, compromised, sectarian, as you guys in the West lol. This is giving “noble savage” myth.
  • It’s less the leftists you meet and more the leftists that are allowed to have power and influence.

Only true to some extend. There’s a ton more people with anti-imperialism sentiment than any western country, but there’s lots of libs and bootlickers too.

I’ve already seen a bunch of venezuelan libs on bluesky and here in Brasil the rigmt wing, specially bolsonaristas, are celebrating and calling for the same to happen here, inclading a lot of politicians.

Why are we even talking about the libs? Libs are objectively rightwing regardless of the country.

Because there’s a ton of libs that actually tend to lean more to the left in latin america that opposes and condems the USian invade while also saying shit like agreeing Maduro is a dictator.

As much as I also don’t see them as leftists, there is a clear difference between these libs and the ones that full on agree with the invasion.

A lib is a lib. A defender of the capitalist status quo. A leftist who claims to be ‘anti-capitalist’ but regurgitate the same imperialist propaganda from the largest capitalist government is a problem on the left.
That’s an oversimplification. Here in Brazil for example there are strands of workerism that have a lot of the same criticsms we have, fight in a lot of the same fights, but don’t take into account class and don’t want to overcome capitalism. They are still libs and as wrong as they are, they are considered left here and are much more left than the current government.
The ones who consider social democrats and liberals ‘center left’ need to redo their political education.
I don’t like it either but we can’t simply ignore it all and antagonize those that are willing to be by our side in one way or another, it just isn’t that simple

I tried and this is what I received.
