There are opposing semantics to what the butterfly could mean. Maybe the butterfly is deeply reformed and frightened.

Kinda interesting point here that bigots aren’t going to magically de-bigot themselves if left to their own devices

They need to be constantly challenged

Tribalism has been with the human race since we’ve had literal tribes. Not being racist, in comparison, is relatively new.

Not trying to justify racism but pointing out that the reason why decent people aren’t racists is because we learned that basing hatred on intrinsic qualities in a person is stupid and we should cooperate instead of oppress.

But there are people who just want to oppress.

I don’t think constantly challenging them is going to change what they think though. Best the society can do is to make sure they can’t act out their racism against others.

“Challenged” has to equal forced, potentially with violence. The only times in which it seemed like racism was on a down swing was when racist had to hide themselves out of fear.
