Wow…

After growing up with the Frankenstein of the 50s/60s, I decided to read the original before watching the latest movie.

5 minutes in and it seems as true to the original as those old B/W movies.

Let’s see how we get on, shall we…

Ok, 12 minutes in and I’m going to have to totally disassociate not only with the bill but also those wonderfully b-grade interpretations of my childhood.

Right.

19 minutes in.

They may as well have called this “Bullshitstain”…I mean…“Bullshitstein”.

Did Guillermo and I read the same book?!

If we did, this is certainly *not* the movie of *that* book.

I’m honestly not sure I can watch to completion. Perhaps I’ll continue tomorrow.

Perhaps not.

@europlus I don't think any filmed version I've seen has ever truly followed the book, but arguably the one that kept its spirit best was probably the TV serial Frankenstein The True Story. (spoiler: it aint true... but I loved it as a kid).

@retrotechtive I have yet to see that one. I’ve been thinking tonight I should seek it out.

I mean, I loved the over the top earlier Boris movies, but if you’re going to try to make “high art” out of it, don’t make it a soap opera parody (which this latest one seems after less than half an hour).

@europlus yikes! Well, I'm going to watch it at some point and see what I think, I do try to watch all incarnations. I don't need it to be a book match, it can do its own thing, but I do need to be able to lose myself in it without becoming a production critic (can't help myself sometimes ;))

That TV version, I can't be objective about it, I was too young and swept along by it so it may not be your thing - but it's worth a look in any case.

@retrotechtive I remember that tv version coming out, but I never saw it. Your post reminded me of it :)

Is that the one with Sting in it? (If so, man, is that dredging memories up from nowhere!)

@retrotechtive oh, no, that looks like The Bride, which I also haven’t seen.
@europlus nope, not that one - I don't think I've seen that one. Might have to try it!
