Spain and Portugal: 40 years in the EU!

On 1 January 1986, Spain and Portugal joined the European Union.

A leap into a new modern era – from limitations to new freedoms and new opportunities.

Massive EU investments, access to the Single Market, boosting jobs, innovation, modern infrastructures and a stronger democracy.

Four decades later, Spain and Portugal are a crucial part of Europe’s story and it’s future.

40 years of progress. Together!

@EUCommission Quarant'anni, ma sto cazzo di rispetto della privacy manco nei sogni.

@EUCommission That is quite an achievement. So cherish the moment, protect EU citzens' privacy, and don't spoil it with mass surveillance!

We're watching you.

@EUCommission I had no idea that the EU existed back then. Always thought it would have been the European Community [EC] back then ?!?
@EUCommission In German we used the term "Europäische Gemeinschaft", abbreviated EG. The EU came much later.

@EUCommission

In 2017, Spain used armed forces against its own citizens. According to Article 7th of the Treaty of the European Union, Spain should have been expelled. Instead, nothing happened ... and France and Germany continue to benefit from Spanish MEPs largely voting en bloc and in line with their policies in exchange for continued economic support – Spain currently holds over 100% debt relative to its GDP. Never mind the Maastricht agreement for accession either.

@albertcardona @EUCommission

  • Armed forces is the army, not the police¹.
  • A 100% debt doesn't mean anything; it's the capability to pay what sends you to a default.
  • Spain is currently a payer to the EU except for the relief funds that all countries in the Union have received.

¹That day was handled by the Rajoy's government in almost the worst possible way.

@bufalo1973 @albertcardona @EUCommission Guardia Civil is part of Spanish Army, they are not police.
@quimsilvestre @albertcardona @EUCommission but the Union law is about the army attacking the people, like in 1973 Chile.
@bufalo1973 @albertcardona @EUCommission Guardia Civil did not attack catalan people in 2017? Do you want to see videos?
@quimsilvestre @albertcardona @EUCommission I saw it live. And I say GC is part of the military by definition but it's a police group in practice. If the GC was a strictly military group they couldn't do traffic work because that's a civilian job. You don't see the army or the air force stopping people on the road.

@bufalo1973 @quimsilvestre @EUCommission

Call that state-operated armed group whatever you like. The use of force by the state against the people is not only morally wrong, it is also what Spain has stood for since at least 1936 and entirely against the Treaty of the European Union.

@EUCommission “Se garantiza el secreto de las comunicaciones y, en especial, de las postales, telegráficas y telefónicas, salvo resolución judicial.” Artículo 18 de la Constitución española de 1978.

Lets hope that we can continue feeling that our Constitution is aligned with the EU, do not taint it with mass surveillance.

@EUCommission
Thankyou for your presence on the Fediverse. We need it! Every European country that joins the EU makes it stronger. The EU is a success because all this diversity requires compromises. The EU is not perfect. I wish it was. But it remains the only "glue" for us European citizens. We are the last hope for democracy. We need to stand up for it and we need to stand up for the EU. Together we are stronger. We just need to believe in it and be a biy more positive and optimistic.
