I do agree with that - I want to be super-clear that I don't think it's bad that critters have different definitions, a lot of the debate comes from real very legitimate nuance that critters have with emotional reactions to this stuff - the context, the implications, etc..
And I empathize with anypony in a position where general community labels aren't granular enough to filter around something that's legitimately triggering to them. I have been in that position a few times, it's why I obsess this stuff with my own artwork.
Ultimately it's just really difficult to navigate (and platforms like Bluesky make it harder). It's worth trying to navigate, but it's definitely something where I used to have a harder opinions, and I've had those opinions worked out of me from interacting with the community X3
Like I used to be really firmly in the camp of "endo and nonfatal are synonyms." And then I was like, "look I'll prove it, I'll ask a bunch of critters I know without giving them any context", and then within a few hours was like "ok, wtf I guess I won't tag transformation as endo" X3
And I still regularly have situations I get into where I'm like.. "okay I don't know how to tag this, I have to guess." The other tricky part is, I can invent some kind of tag to distinguish between two things (and do sometimes), but it won't help me if nopony knows to block or search it.
This came up for me with fatal roleplays. A lot endo-only critters following me don't have a problem with that stuff - where in-universe the pred/prey are consenting and safe, but are roleplaying fatal. The followers who do dislike that are a minority, so for those I use #fatalRP.
That's another value judgement - I leave off fatal for those because the majority of my community agrees, so I feel a little bit better about saying "here's a way you can block it, but you do need to add another tag to your mutelist to do so." If the ratio was the opposite, I'd do something else.
It's a lot of like.. getting messages that I might agree with or disagree with - but not saying that the definitions are right/wrong as much as saying, "okay, what's the best way I can make it so that this critter can filter my stuff within the constraints of the platform I'm on?"
I get feedback on "safe" vore too. The way I use the tag is to imply "harmless" vore - ie vore that doesn't have any lasting damage (including psychological). I think that's the majority view. But I have gotten a one or two messages across my sites saying "oh, I take that to mean 'nonsexual vore'".
The oddest complaint I ever got was that I used "nonperma" on a reformation vore piece with extended time before reformation, and I got somepony saying, "if it's not permavore then it's nonperma, you're using that tag wrong." But then I checked and I was literally the only artist using the tag >w<
And that was a lot easier for me to reply back with "okay, does me using the tag to help distinguish between types of reformation cause any problems to anypony at all, given that it's literally only showing up on my pieces?" X3
