Second part of the original plan was to meet some friends and hit the late night thing at LPR. But what to do in between? Why, see as much of the PH show as possible, of course! Got myself a freebie/miracle and made it up there and inside near the start of the second set. Found some friends quickly and enjoyed the hell out of some bonus Phish! My comments from yesterday still hold, but it was a super fun set. The jam in Waves of Hope was pretty stellar, even if it did bounce through literally 20 cool ideas without stopping to explore before ending up in a vicious two-chord rock-out. It was all extra gravy and I certainly did enjoy! (somehow took no photos!)
Finally down to LPR for Medeski, Martin, Metzger, and Cline for a full 2ish hours of non-stop improv. This one hit all the buttons! Formless morass of noise to tight-as-fuck dance jams and almost every point in between. All four dudes got a chance to shine individually and were a formidable force when they locked in, which was more often than not. Love it when a show like this is just weird enough to thin out the crowd a bit. Went from comfortably crowded to perfect crowd size in good time. A great, great set. Glad I finally hit one of these and glad they moved it to LPR.
So, I'm traveling from stop 1 to stop 2 on the subway and I'm in relatively deep Brooklyn with my headphones on and I can sort of hear the MTA announcement in the station through the open subway doors over my music, but I'm barely paying attention because why would I?, and then as the doors are closing and my music is a little quiet I hear "...thank you and *set the gearshifts for the high gear of your soul!*" and I'm like... Is that TREY doing a MTA announcement?
Turns out yes, yes it is.
1995 me is very much like WTF!
So yeah, not only am I not just seeing 1 PH, I'm seeing almost all of em.
The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry...
