Aindulmedir - The Winter Scriptures
i finally dove into dungeon synth after a bit of "where do i start?" trepidation. a lot of auditions later, i found i'm not into a lot of it at all, but the winter-synth variety has some really lovely stuff. i basically bought everything from this artist. this reminds me of some of the Scandinavian stuff from the 1990s that helped me get over industrial music. pretty and tranquil.

Muslimgauze - Drugsherpa
i've been way into muslimgauze for decades now, haven't yet made my way through the entirety of his gargantuan discography. this one was (sort of) new to me. it is different mixes of material that appears on other albums like Al Zulfiqar Shaheed and Hamas Arc, which is some of my fave stuff from him. trancey & propulsive. listening to muslimgauze feels very appropriate these days, given the horrors in the news re: Israel.

Mukqs - Eye Frame
easily my favorite album from sampler-god Mukqs, annoyingly good. hard to believe it's all constructed with SP-404, with, as he famously always declares, "without overdubs". intensely captivating sound piles.

i really wanted this album in the 1990s, but never had the $$ to get it until now. the zovs explore the tensions between analogue and digital equipment, and their respective failings and end up with some really intriguing, rhythmic soundworlds. great shit.

2024 release from this venerable producer, who used to be on masto @roberthenke but isn't active any longer. his synclavier compositions stand apart from other people doing techno-adjacent music, and has always found a welcome place in my listening rotation.

another artist whose work dominated my listening year was Vladislav Delay (partner of @poemproducer). fractured, dubby samples colliding in a disorienting minimalist yet maximalist style that is fully unique to him. so much to learn from his music.

somber and severe compositions for choir, brass and organ. a touchpoint is Arvö Part, but a bigger touchstone is doom metal. fittingly, Stephen O'Malley from Sunn O))) is credited as producer. beautiful stuff for bleak times.

Thomas Köner - Motus
Köner is known for extremely minimal, glacial drone music, but also for adding an experimental edge to his dub-techno collab w/ Andy Mellweg, Porter Ricks. this album is different from his normal atmospherics, closer to the sound of Porter Ricks' 2017 album Anguilla Electrica, but with the beats much more obscured. heavily filtered bass throbbing, and flitting saw waves. next level stuff, RIYL Azzazin by Muslimgauze
