ppl complain abt linux being buggy and then windows bugs will be something like

there’s a known issue where flumbus.dll (used for compatibility with microsoft crumpet 2004, also windows checks for this file on startup and if its not there windows will destroy itself) that causes it to email every single person who has a microsoft account a link to an easily browesable snapshot of your file system. This bug can be caused by:

  • Turning on your computer

in order to fix this you need to download JimTools.exe from jimtools.questionablysafeweb. site. be careful to use the version from july 17th 2003 and NOT THE VERSION FROM JULY 18th 2003 (which is when Jim (creator of JimTools) got bored and made jimtools send hitmen to your address). anyway once you’ve downloaded JimTools.exe, run JimTools.exe and press the button that says “I accept that Jim’s (creator of JimTools) ideas are infallible and if they do fail I agree that I will personally go to Jim’s house (address located in the letter you will receive shortly) and give him all of your belongings and bow down to Jim (creator of JimTools)”

Then restart your computer. Your wallpaper will have changed to a picture of Jim (creator of JimTools). Go to wherever you get your mail and grab the letter from Jim (creator of JimTools). Read it, and make sure to follow all the instructions carefully. Do not disobey Jim’s (creator of Jimtools) orders, or you will face his wrath

@badeline every update the printer driver stops working

to fix it you can run the troubleshooting wizard which will say it didn't find any problems but somehow fixes it anyway

every time you run the troubleshooting wizard, windows helpfully warns you that the wizard has been deprecated and will be removed in a future update

@badeline also on windows 10, the scanner driver for the same printer stopped working because they changed it to use some windows 11 exclusive API, but windows 10 force updated it anyway

the manufacturer "driver" is literally a generic network scanner client but now with an electron UI because Microsoft decided every manufacturer gets to make your life miserable with their own manufacturer specific UI even if the scanner actually uses generic interoperable protocols that you could have a generic scanner app for

@badeline Both scanning and printing Just Works on Linux. You add the printer to CUPS as an IPP printer and both printing and scanning Just Works, one time setup and it's done.

You even get a selection of scanner apps, some made for scanning single pages (Skanlite) and some made for fully utilizing ADF features to scan lots of pages at once (Skanpage).

@lunareclipse honestly i feel like scanning and printing are really linux's weak suit when it comes to usability, but it sure as hell works better than windows' printing

@lunareclipse @badeline I'm starting to think the words "Just Works" and "Linux" do not ever belong in the same sentence, because Linux users are crafty and will find ways to break anything 😂

@lunareclipse @badeline Way way back in the antediluvian (early 90's), our old 386 running windows (I think 3.0) would garble the print driver on the disk if it lost power during printing.
Only happened a couple times, but was handy for providing that little seed of doubt.
